Remember, on Memorial Day

Memorial Memories

I remember better times, when our always faulty (in one way or another) country was nonetheless a great country. All countries are faulty, obviously. All people are faulty too. But I remember as a little boy, marching around my room pretending to be the great soldier (he was that in my little boy mind), President John F. Kennedy. He was killed, and that affected me in ways I still don’t fully comprehend. My first hero was killed when I was 5. His brother and MLK also were killed.

America lost claim to its innocence long ago. I won’t dirty these pages speaking of the blight holding sway today. I’ll just pop up a new picture of my adopted Sergeant and his fellow 9th Massachusetts “Yankees”, who fought and died 109 years ago in France. While his stone is still not fixed, it still stands. Although I had to straighten his flag again today. Dunno what’s up with that. Maybe he’s playing an ongoing joke on me as the unofficial maintenance man for his grave site.

He’s on the end, left side.

A cemetery scene featuring several gravestones and small American flags placed beside them, with a road running through the foreground.

We’ll go see my father (Korea) and my wife’s Grampy (WWII) and remember what America was. And swear to see it be something much better than it is now in the coming years.

Happy Memorial Day.
